The socialist Martin Schulz is, today, the best positioned candidate to become president of the European Commission. The Parliament of Strasbourg has in its possession a macro electoral study, collecting the surveys carried out in all the countries of the Union, which gives a slight advantage to the leader of the PSE who, in addition, has assured the support of the Liberal Group. As El Confidencial Digital has learned , the candidate of the European Socialist Party for the presidency of the Commission is, at the moment, four points ahead of the Luxembourger Jean-Claude Juncker , head of the EPP list and main rival in the next elections of the Month of May. The data, provided by well-placed sources in Strasbourg, is extracted from the calculation made based on demographic studies carried out in recent months by all the EU countries participating in these elections. In the European Parliament they admit that “there will be variables” and that “the distance can be reduced.” However, and despite the fact that both candidacies are somewhat balanced, the election of Martin Schulz as Durao Barroso's successor at the head of the Commission is considered certain , due to the “political alliances” that the PSE has already secured. Liberals will tip the balance In the composition of the new European Commission, the parliamentary group formed by the so-called Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe will play a key role.
The election of the head of the list “kept both Martin Schulz and Jean-Claude Juncker in suspense, because it was at stake which of the two they would support. The liberals had to choose between the current Commissioner for Economic and Financial Phone Number ListAffairs, the Finnish Olli Rehn, and the former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt . The victory of the latter has tipped the balance in favor of the European Socialist Party. According to the sources consulted by ECD , in the Alliance of Liberals the election of the candidate became “a kind of primaries” to decide whether the group supported the popular or the socialists in the nomination of the new president of the Commission: “ Rehn “I wanted to vote for Juncker and Verhofstadt for Schulz.” Now, the socialist candidate "knows that he has the support of the liberals", so, barring a very unforeseen turnaround in the polls, " he will be Barroso's successor." Concern over the arrival of xenophobic MEPs The national surveys held by the European Parliament show a disturbing fact, which is very worrying in Brussels and Strasbourg: the rise of xenophobic and anti-European parties. According to the data managed by the Community Chamber, the European elections in May may lead to the arrival of some 80 MEPs belonging to this type of formations to the EU Parliament . A figure that, taking into account that today “they do not exceed 30”, has the EU on alert.
Among the xenophobic and anti-European parties that have clear options to enter the European Parliament are: Golden Dawn (Greece); True Finns (Finland); Center Democratic Union (Sweden); Marine Le Pen's National Front (France); Party for Freedom (Netherlands); and Northern League (Italy). In Brussels the rise of IU and UPyD draws attention On a national level, the sources of the European Parliament consulted by ECD highlight the growth that Izquierda Unida and UPyD have experienced in the last five years, and the good results that electoral polls from Spain predict for them: IU would go from two seats in 2009 to six in 2014 , and Rosa Díez's game from one to four or five. The integration of UPyD into the future European Parliament is an unknown. In 2009, Sosa Wagner joined the so-called “non-registered” group, which makes up a kind of Mixed Group, in the style of the Congress of Deputies. This circumstance may be repeated in 2014 , since UPyD has ruled out joining the Popular and Socialist groups, and the Liberals have already shown their refusal to welcome Rosa Díez's party. Some sources link this position of the liberals to the “ pressure ” of the PNV MEP Izaskun Bilbao , integrated with the liberals.
